It is recommended to increase supplications, send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and perform ghusl before attending the Friday prayer. The day of Jumu‘ah is a weekly celebration for Muslims, and the Sunnah provides specific acts to maximize its blessings.

The Obligation and Virtue of the Friday Prayer

The Friday prayer is a direct command from Allah, as He states in the Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
"O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allâh [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!"

This verse establishes the priority of the Friday prayer over worldly affairs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further emphasized the significance of this day, stating that it is the best day on which the sun has risen.

Performing Ghusl (Ritual Bath) Before Jumu‘ah

One of the most emphasized Sunnah acts is performing ghusl on Friday. The Prophet ﷺ said:

مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ غُسْلَ الْجَنَابَةِ ثُمَّ رَاحَ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَرَّبَ بَدَنَةً
"Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday, the Ghusl required after sexual impurity, and then goes (to the mosque), it is as if he had offered a camel as a sacrifice."

This hadith highlights the immense reward of this act. The ghusl is recommended to be performed before leaving for the mosque, and it is preferable to do it at home. It is also considered a form of purification that prepares the believer for the spiritual gathering.

Wearing Clean Clothes and Applying Perfume

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged cleanliness and adornment on Friday. He said:

{"مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلَبِسَ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ ثِيَابِهِ وَمَسَّ مِنْ طِيبٍ إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْجُمُعَةَ فَلَمْ يَتَخَطَّ رِقَابَ النَّاسِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَنْصَتَ إِذَا خَرَجَ إِمَامُهُ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلاَتِهِ كَانَتْ كَفَّارَةً لِمَا بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ جُمُعَتِهِ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا\""} "Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday, puts on his best clothes, applies perfume if he has any, then goes to the Friday prayer without stepping over people's necks, prays what Allah has prescribed for him, then listens attentively when the Imam comes out until he finishes his prayer, it will be an expiation for (his sins) between that Friday and the previous Friday."

Wearing the best available clothing and applying non-alcoholic perfume are acts of respect for the day and the mosque. This practice also reflects the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, who would dress well on Fridays.

Proceeding Early to the Mosque

Arriving early for the Friday prayer is highly recommended. The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ كَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَكْتُبُونَ الْأَوَّلَ فَالْأَوَّلَ
"When it is Friday, the angels stand at the gates of the mosque and write down the people in the order of their arrival."

The one who comes first receives the reward of a camel sacrifice, then a cow, then a sheep, and so forth, as mentioned in the same hadith. Therefore, it is beneficial to plan to attend the mosque early.

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is a confirmed Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

مَنْ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ أَضَاءَ لَهُ مِنَ النُّورِ مَا بَيْنَ الْجُمُعَتَيْنِ
"Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, it will illuminate him with light from one Friday to the next."

This recitation can be done at any time during the day or night of Friday. It is a virtuous act that brings spiritual light and protection.

Increasing Salawat (Blessings) Upon the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ specifically encouraged sending abundant blessings upon him on Friday. He said:

إِنَّ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ أَيَّامِكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فِيهِ خُلِقَ آدَمُ وَفِيهِ قُبِضَ وَفِيهِ النَّفْخَةُ وَفِيهِ الصَّعْقَةُ فَأَكْثِرُوا عَلَيَّ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فَإِنَّ صَلَاتَكُمْ مَعْرُوضَةٌ عَلَيَّ
"Among the best of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the Trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made. So send more blessings upon me on that day, for your blessings will be presented to me."

This is a direct invitation from the Prophet ﷺ to increase our love and remembrance of him through salawat. Common formulas include "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad" or longer versions from the Sunnah.

Making Du'a (Supplication) on Friday

Friday contains an hour during which supplications are accepted. The Prophet ﷺ said:

فِيهِ سَاعَةٌ لَا يُوَافِقُهَا عَبْدٌ مُسْلِمٌ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي يَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى شَيْئًا إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ
"There is an hour on Friday during which no Muslim servant asks Allah for anything but He will give it to him."

Scholars have differed regarding the exact timing of this hour. The most widely held opinions are that it is the last hour after `Asr, or the time between the Imam’s ascent to the pulpit and the conclusion of the prayer. The believer is encouraged to engage in sincere du'a throughout the day, especially during these times.

Walking to the Mosque with Tranquility

When going to the Friday prayer, the believer should walk with dignity and calmness. The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلَا تَأْتُوهَا وَأَنْتُمْ تَسْعَوْنَ وَأْتُوهَا وَأَنْتُمْ تَمْشُونَ وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّكِينَةُ
"When the prayer is established, do not come running; come walking with tranquility."

This applies to any prayer, but it is especially relevant for Friday. It preserves the dignity of the worshipper and ensures focus during the khutbah.

Listening Attentively to the Khutbah

Once the Imam begins the sermon, it is obligatory to listen silently. The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا قُلْتَ لِصَاحِبِكَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَنْصِتْ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَقَدْ لَغَوْتَ
"If you say to your companion on Friday, 'Listen attentively,' while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in idle talk."

Even a command to be quiet is considered idle talk during the khutbah, which negates the reward of Jumu‘ah. Therefore, complete silence and attention are required.
