Benefits of Surah Al-falaq

Benefits of Surah Al-falaq — sourced from authentic Quran and hadith references.

Surah Al-Falaq, the 113th chapter of the Quran, is a profound supplication seeking refuge in Allah from all forms of evil. Its benefits are rooted in its divine protection against spiritual and physical harm, as affirmed by authentic hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Protection from Envy and Magic

One of the primary benefits of Surah Al-Falaq is its power to shield against envy (hasad) and witchcraft (sihr). The chapter explicitly seeks refuge from "the evil of those who practice envy when they envy" (Quran 113:5). The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the protective role of this surah alongside Surah An-Nas. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ became ill, he would recite Al-Mu'awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) and blow over himself. This practice was not only for personal protection but also a means of healing.

Healing and Ruqyah

Surah Al-Falaq is integral to the Islamic practice of ruqyah (spiritual healing). The Prophet ﷺ used these verses for both prevention and cure. When a man from the companions was stung by a scorpion, he recited Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas over the wound, and the pain subsided. This demonstrates that the surah can be used as a direct form of treatment for physical ailments, especially those tied to spiritual causes.

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ

Recitation in Morning and Evening Adhkar

The Prophet ﷺ prescribed reciting Surah Al-Falaq, along with Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah An-Nas, as part of the morning and evening remembrances (adhkar). Abdullah ibn Khubayb reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Say: 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad' and 'Qul A'udhu bi Rabbi al-Falaq' and 'Qul A'udhu bi Rabbi al-Nas' three times in the morning and evening; they will suffice you against everything." This hadith confirms that consistent recitation provides comprehensive protection from all forms of harm throughout the day and night.

Safeguarding the Home and Family

Reciting Surah Al-Falaq in the home is a means of invoking Allah's protection over one's household. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would go to bed each night and join his hands together, blow into them, and recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, Qul A'udhu bi Rabbi al-Falaq, and Qul A'udhu bi Rabbi al-Nas. Then he would wipe his hands over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head, face, and front. This practice can be extended to the entire family, making the home a fortress against spiritual harm.

Relief from Anxiety and Fear

Surah Al-Falaq is a remedy for psychological distress, such as anxiety and fear. The very act of seeking refuge in Allah from "the evil of what He has created" (Quran 113:2) reassures the believer that all forms of harm are under divine control. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this surah when afflicted by distress, as narrated by Aisha: "Whenever the Prophet went to bed every night, he used to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, and then blow on his palms and wipe them over his body." This act instills trust in Allah and dispels fear.

Preventing Nightmares and Evil Whispers

The surah also protects against nightmares and the whispers of shaytan. Its recitation before sleep forms a spiritual barrier. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that when one has a disturbing dream, they should seek refuge in Allah from the evil of shaytan and blow to their left three times—a practice consistent with the essence of Surah Al-Falaq. Reciting the surah itself ensures sound sleep and protection from such disturbances.
