"Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed (the Qur’ân) unto you (O Muhammad ﷺ), to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you a Khalîl (an intimate friend)!" — Quran 17:73

A khalil is one whose heart is so filled with love for Allah that there remains no room for anything else. This is why Prophet Ibrahim — the Khalilullah — was tested with the command to sacrifice his son, for his khulla meant that no attachment, not even to his beloved child, could rival his love for Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as the seal of the prophets and the most beloved of creation, was granted this same station. In a famous hadith, when asked whom he loves most, the Prophet ﷺ responded with his family members — but clarified that his ultimate love belongs to Allah. His life demonstrated this reality: he said, "There is none of you whose soul is in my hand except that I will defend him from the Fire, but I do not have the power to benefit or harm anyone except Allah." Are our friendships, our attachments, and our loyalties in line with His pleasure?
