Al-Mujtaba: The Chosen — Name 45 of the Messenger ﷺ
The name Al-Mujtaba (المجتبى) means "The Chosen" or "The Elect" — referring to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the one whom Allah distinguished, purified, and selected above all creation to carry the final message. This name affirms that his prophethood was not an accident of history but a deliberate divine choice made before the foundations of the world.

The Linguistic Meaning of Al-Mujtaba
The Arabic root j-b-y (ج-ب-ي) carries the sense of gathering, selecting, and picking out the best. The word ijtibā (اجتباء) means to choose or elect something with care, preferring it over others due to its excellence. When applied to Allah's action, it denotes a choice rooted in divine wisdom and knowledge — not arbitrary preference, but selection based on what Allah knows to be most fitting for His purpose.
The Qur'an uses this very term for other prophets as well. Allah says about Prophet Musa (Moses) عليه السلام:
For Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, this selection reached its culmination. He was not merely one chosen among many; he was the final seal, the most beloved, and the intercessor of his nation. The name Al-Mujtaba captures the uniqueness of his station.

Evidence of His Selection in the Qur'an
Allah's choice of Muhammad ﷺ as His final messenger is attested throughout the Qur'an. The very fact that revelation descended upon him — an unlettered man from an obscure corner of Arabia — was itself a sign of divine selection. Allah addresses the wonder of this choice:
> "Is it a wonder for mankind that We have sent Our Revelation to a man from among themselves (i.e. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) (saying): 'Warn mankind (of the coming torment in Hell), and give good news to those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh and in His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) that they shall have with their Lord the rewards of their good deeds?' (But) the disbelievers say: 'This is indeed an evident sorcerer (i.e. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Qur'ân)!'" >
The disbelievers found it astonishing that a man from among themselves — someone they had known for forty years as an honest trader and trustworthy confidant — would suddenly receive divine revelation. Yet this is precisely the pattern of Allah's selection: He chooses from among His creation those whose hearts He has already purified, and He prepares them long before their public mission begins. The same wonderment is recorded in Quran 38:4:
> "And they (Arab pagans) wonder that a warner (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say: 'This (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) is a sorcerer, a liar.'" >
These verses reveal something profound: the selection of Muhammad ﷺ was so extraordinary that it defied the expectations of his contemporaries. They expected a messenger to arrive with worldly power, miraculous signs, or angelic accompaniment. Instead, Allah chose a man who walked among them, ate with them, and traded with them — precisely so that his message could be verified by his character. His selection was not marked by pomp but by the gradual, undeniable unfolding of truth.

The Chosen Among His People
The name Al-Mujtaba also carries a social meaning: Muhammad ﷺ was chosen from the noblest lineage of the Arabs. He descended from the Banu Hashim, the most honored clan of Quraysh, the tribe that held custodianship of the Ka'bah. His ancestry traces back to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام through his son Isma'il (Ishmael) عليه السلام. This lineage was not incidental — it was part of Allah's preparatory work.
Yet his selection was not based on tribal pride. Rather, it was a confirmation of the divine pattern described in the Qur'an:
His character — known as Al-Amin (the Trustworthy) and Al-Sadiq (the Truthful) even before prophethood — was itself a sign of divine selection. Allah had prepared him through decades of upright living, so that when the call came, there was nothing in his biography that could be used against him.

Our Response to His Selection
Understanding that Muhammad ﷺ is Al-Mujtaba carries practical implications for every believer. First, it demands that we approach his teachings with the reverence due to one whom Allah personally chose. His sunnah is not merely cultural heritage but divinely guided practice. The Qur'an instructs:
> "They believe in Allâh and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma'rûf (Islâmic Monotheism, and following Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and opposing Prophet Muhammad ﷺ); and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous." >
This verse links belief in Allah and the Last Day with following the Prophet ﷺ. His selection means that obedience to him is obedience to Allah, and opposition to him is opposition to Allah. The disbelievers in the Qur'an are repeatedly described as those who opposed the divine choice — they "wondered" and rejected precisely because they could not accept that Allah had selected one of their own.
Second, knowing that he is Al-Mujtaba should inspire love and devotion. When we recognize that Allah chose him for us — to guide us, teach us, and intercede for us — our hearts naturally incline toward him. This love is not sentimental but practical: it manifests in following his example, preserving his teachings, and defending his honor.

The Fruits of His Election
The selection of Muhammad ﷺ was not for his own benefit alone but for the benefit of all humanity until the end of time. Through him, the final revelation was preserved; through him, the straight path was illuminated; through him, the mercy of Allah was manifested in its most complete form. The Qur'an itself engages with those who questioned this selection, and it directs believers toward a firm response grounded in knowledge:
> "It is He who has sent this Scripture down to you [Prophet]. Some of its verses are definite in meaning — these are the cornerstone of the Scripture — and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, 'We believe in it: it is all from our Lord' — only those with real perception will take heed." >
Those "firmly grounded in knowledge" do not waver in accepting the divine selection of Muhammad ﷺ. They recognize that the very existence of this ummah, the preservation of the Qur'an, and the spread of Islam across continents are all fruits of that selection. The plan that Allah set in motion when He chose Muhammad ﷺ continues to unfold, and every generation of believers bears witness to its truth.
