Al-Bushra: The Good News — Name 48 of the Messenger ﷺ

Al-Bushra ("the good news") is one of the beautiful names of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, reflecting his role as the bearer of glad tidings to humanity — the one who announces the mercy, forgiveness, and reward that await those who believe and do right.

In the Qur'an, Allah describes His prophets as senders of good news and warning. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is no exception. Allah says in Surah Yunus: "Is it a wonder for mankind that We have sent Our Revelation to a man from among themselves (saying): 'Warn mankind (of the coming torment in Hell), and give good news to those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and in His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) that they shall have with their Lord the rewards of their good deeds?'"

This verse pairs the warning of punishment with the giving of good news. The one who delivers both is the Messenger ﷺ, and thus the name Al-Bushra captures a fundamental aspect of his mission.

The Prophet ﷺ as the Bearer of Glad Tidings

The concept of bushra (good news) in Islam is not limited to worldly announcements. It refers primarily to the spiritual realities of faith: forgiveness of sins, entry into Paradise, and the pleasure of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ was sent to announce these realities to those who respond to the call of monotheism.

In the Qur'an, the same pairing of warning and good news appears with regard to the Messenger. Allah says in Surah Yasin — though not in our verified list — but the pattern is consistent across revelation. In our verified verses, Surah Al-Anfal addresses the Prophet ﷺ directly: "So if you, [O Muhammad], gain dominance over them in war, disperse by [means of] them those behind them that perhaps they will be reminded."

Even in this verse about military conduct, the underlying purpose remains guidance and remembrance — not mere domination. The Prophet ﷺ is the one who reminds, who warns, and who gives hope. His very presence was a means of blessing for those who listened.

The Meaning of Bushra in the Qur'an

The word bushra appears in several contexts in the Qur'an. In Surah Yusuf, when the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) send a water-carrier to fetch water, he exclaims: "O good news! This is a boy!"

Here, bushra is used as an exclamation of joy at unexpected good fortune. But in the context of the Prophet ﷺ, bushra is not happenstance. It is the deliberate, divinely-ordained message of hope. The Prophet ﷺ is the one who turns the human verdict of despair — "we have sinned, we are lost" — into the divine verdict of mercy: "turn to Allah, and He will forgive you."

Allah, in the Qur'an, describes the believers as those who respond to this call. In Surah Ar-Ra'd, not in our list, the believers are told to rejoice in Allah's mercy and grace. But our verified verses suffice to show that the giving of good news is integral to the prophetic mission. The Messenger ﷺ was not sent merely to warn; he was sent to give glad tidings to those who believe.

The Prophet ﷺ as the "Sorceller" in the Eyes of His People

When the Prophet ﷺ came with the Qur'an, the disbelievers were perplexed. They had never seen anything like it. They said, as recorded in Surah Sad: "And they wonder that a warner has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say: 'This is a sorcerer, a liar.'"

In Surah Yunus, they went further: "The disbelievers say: 'This is indeed an evident sorcerer.'"

Their accusation was a defense mechanism. They could not accept that a human being from among themselves could be the bearer of divine good news. So they labeled him a sorcerer, a liar, a poet. But Allah affirms the truth: this man is a warner and a bringer of good news.

This is a lesson for us. When we call people to Allah, we may be met with accusations and mockery. But the Prophet ﷺ, who was the ideal caller, faced the same. He remained patient, kind, and persistent in delivering the bushra.

The Good News for the Believers

The bushra that the Prophet ﷺ brought was not vague or abstract. It was concrete: the believers shall have with their Lord the rewards of their good deeds.

This reward is the ultimate bushra. It is the culmination of faith and righteous action. The Prophet ﷺ gave this news not to flatter or to deceive, but to motivate and to console. The believer, in the midst of trials, needs to hear that there is a reward awaiting them. The Prophet ﷺ was the bearer of that message.

Moreover, the bushra of the Prophet ﷺ extends to this world as well. His teachings bring peace to hearts, clarity to minds, and justice to societies. The one who follows him finds true happiness — not the fleeting joy of material accumulation, but the deep contentment of knowing Allah and being known by Him.

The Firmness of the Prophet ﷺ in Delivering Bushra

In Surah Al-Imran, Allah speaks about the nature of revelation: "It is He who has sent this Scripture down to you. Some of its verses are definite in meaning — these are the cornerstone of the Scripture — and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, 'We believe in it: it is all from our Lord' — only those with real perception will take heed."

This verse, though general, has a special relevance to the mission of bushra. The clear verses speak of the reward for believers. The ambiguous ones are left to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ, being the recipient of this Scripture, conveyed both with equal fidelity. He did not distort the good news to please the people, nor did he hide it for fear of opposition.

His firmness in delivering the bushra is the model for all who follow him. We must not dilute the message to make it more palatable, nor must we withhold it out of shyness or fear. The good news is too precious to be kept hidden.
