Common Mistakes During Hajj
Common Mistakes During Hajj — sourced from authentic Quran and hadith references.
Performing Ḥajj is a profound act of worship that requires sincerity, knowledge, and adherence to the Divine commands. Many pilgrims, out of noble intentions but insufficient preparation, fall into common errors that can diminish the rewards or even invalidate rituals. This guide highlights frequent mistakes during Ḥajj—based on the Quran and Prophetic guidance—so that you may avoid them and perfect your journey to Allah.
Neglecting the Spiritual Etiquette of Ḥajj
A major mistake is focusing solely on physical acts while ignoring the spiritual conditions. Allah commands in the Quran:
This verse highlights that Ḥajj is a period free from sexual relations, disobedience, and disputing. Some pilgrims neglect this by engaging in arguments, backbiting, or excessive Worldly talk. Others fail to maintain consciousness of Allah throughout. Remember that the best provision is taqwā (God-consciousness), not just physical supplies. A pilgrim should guard their tongue, eyes, and heart, making every act of Ḥajj a means of drawing closer to Allah.
Also, some assume that sinning during Ḥajj carries the same weight as any other day, but scholars note that disobedience in sacred times and places is more severe. The Prophet ﷺ warned: "Whoever performs Ḥajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife) or commit sin, will come back (free from sin) as on the day his mother gave birth to him."
Delaying or Missing the Mīqāt (Station of Iḥrām)
A critical procedural error is failing to enter the state of iḥrām from the designated mīqāt. Many pilgrims travel by air and, unless informed, pass the mīqāt without assuming iḥrām. The Prophet ﷺ fixed these boundaries: "They (the people of different regions) should assume iḥrām at the mīqāt for them and also for those who come from those places intending to perform Ḥajj and ʿUmrah."
If a person passes the mīqāt without iḥrām, they must return to the mīqāt, or else they are obliged to offer a sacrifice (dam). Some pilgrims, due to negligence or misinformation, assume iḥrām too late. Others mistakenly believe that anyone who enters a plane or ship can delay iḥrām until they land in Jeddah. The correct practice is to enter iḥrām before crossing the mīqāt, either at the airport or on the plane when approaching the boundary.
Neglecting the Obligations of Iḥrām
Many pilgrims understate the restrictions of iḥrām. While some prohibitions—like refraining from perfume, cutting nails, and wearing stitched clothing for men—are well-known, others are frequently violated. For instance, some men cover their heads even after entering iḥrām, unaware that it is forbidden. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dead person is shrouded in two garments, and the iḥrām garments are removed from him."
Another oversight is the use of scented soap or shampoo, or applying deodorant with fragrance. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly instructed: "Do not wear any garment touched by saffron or wars (a kind of perfume)."
Rushing Through or Missing the Obligatory Rites
A common mistake is speeding through the sacred rites without reflection. Some pilgrims rush from ʿArafāt without performing the essential standing (wuqūf), while others leave before sunset. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Ḥajj is ʿArafāt. Whoever catches ʿArafāt before the dawn of the night of Muzdalifah, he has caught Ḥajj."
Similarly, some pilgrims perform the circumambulation (ṭawāf) while engaged in worldly conversation or without proper ṭahārah (purity). Ḥajj rituals require intention and reverence. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The people of Yemen have come to me, and they are the softest-hearted. Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni."
Mistreating Others and Creating Chaos
Another grave mistake is harming others due to crowds or personal comfort. In the hustle of stoning the Jamarāt or performing ṭawāf, some push, shove, or cause injuries. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized: "A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe."
Furthermore, some pilgrims damage public property or litter in the holy precincts. Allah says in the Quran: "And whoever commits a violation, then We will requite him."
