Hadith on Salah: Authentic Narrations Explained

Hadith on Salah: Authentic Narrations Explained — sourced from authentic Quran and hadith references.

The foundation of Islam is built upon the five pillars, and the most prominent of these after the declaration of faith is the prayer (Ṣalāh). Countless authentic narrations from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ detail its obligation, reward, and correct performance. These narrations clarify that Ṣalāh is not merely a routine but a profound act of worship that purifies the soul and strengthens one’s connection with Allah.

The Obligation and Status of Ṣalāh

Ṣalāh was made obligatory during the Prophet’s ﷺ night journey (Isrā’ wa Mi‘rāj), a clear sign of its supreme importance. The Quran emphasizes this, stating: "Surely, Salāh is an obligation on the believers that is tied up with time" . The Prophet ﷺ further underlined its centrality, saying that the covenant between us and them is prayer, so whoever abandons it has committed disbelief.

{"عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: \"بَيْنَ الْعَبْدِ وَبَيْنَ الْكُفْرِ تَرْكُ الصَّلاَةِ\""}

This narration establishes that deliberately forsaking prayer is a grave matter, placing one outside the fold of faith. It is not a minor sin but a fundamental breach of the covenant between the servant and his Lord. Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ described prayer as the most virtuous deed after the testimony of faith.

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ فَقَالَ: \"إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ\". قِيلَ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ: \"الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ\". قِيلَ: ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ: \"حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ\""}

While the hadith above lists Ḥajj, other narrations confirm that prayer is the best of deeds after faith. For instance, the Prophet ﷺ also stated: "The best of deeds is prayer at its proper time."

{"عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ: \"الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا\""}

These narrations collectively demonstrate that Ṣalāh is the second pillar of Islam, the first deed for which a person will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment. Its proper observance is a sign of true faith.

The Reward and Virtues of Performing Ṣalāh

The immense reward for establishing prayer is a frequent theme in authentic hadith. The Quran also connects prayer with moral purification: "Surely Salāh restrains one from shameful and evil acts" . The Prophet ﷺ elaborated on the spiritual benefits, comparing the five daily prayers to a river flowing by one’s door.

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: \"أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ أَنَّ نَهْرًا بِبَابِ أَحَدِكُمْ يَغْتَسِلُ فِيهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ خَمْسًا، مَا تَقُولُونَ ذَلِكَ يُبْقِي مِنْ دَرَنِهِ؟\" قَالُوا: لاَ يُبْقِي مِنْ دَرَنِهِ شَيْئًا. قَالَ: \"فَذَلِكَ مَثَلُ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ، يَمْحُو اللَّهُ بِهِنَّ الْخَطَايَا\""}

This powerful analogy illustrates that sincere prayer, performed regularly, cleanses a person from minor sins. The Prophet ﷺ also assured that whoever prays the dawn prayer (Fajr) and the afternoon prayer (‘Aṣr) will enter Paradise.

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: \"يَتَعَاقَبُونَ فِيكُمْ مَلاَئِكَةٌ بِاللَّيْلِ وَمَلاَئِكَةٌ بِالنَّهَارِ، وَيَجْتَمِعُونَ فِي صَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ وَصَلاَةِ الْعَصْرِ، ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ الَّذِينَ بَاتُوا فِيكُمْ، فَيَسْأَلُهُمْ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِمْ: كَيْفَ تَرَكْتُمْ عِبَادِي؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: تَرَكْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يُصَلُّونَ، وَأَتَيْنَاهُمْ وَهُمْ يُصَلُّونَ\""}

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized that the five daily prayers, the Friday prayer to the next Friday prayer, and the fast of Ramadan to the next Ramadan are expiation for what is between them, as long as one avoids major sins.

The Manner and Key Elements of Ṣalāh

The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions how to pray in a practical manner, instructing them to follow his example. He said: "Pray as you have seen me praying."

{"عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: \"صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي\""}

This command underscores the importance of adhering to the prophetic method. Key elements include the opening Takbīr (saying "Allāhu Akbar"), recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah in every unit (rak‘ah), bowing (rukū‘), prostrating (sujūd) on seven bones, and concluding with the Tashahhud and Salām. The Prophet ﷺ also warned against incomplete prostrations, comparing one who does not straighten his back to a crow pecking.

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنْ نَقْرَةِ الْغُرَابِ\""}

Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ taught the importance of tranquility and stillness in prayer. He once saw a man praying without settling his back during bowing and prostration, and said: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed."

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَصَلَّى، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: \"ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ\". فَرَجَعَ فَصَلَّى كَمَا صَلَّى، ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، فَقَالَ: \"ارْجِعْ فَصَلِّ فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تُصَلِّ\". ثَلاَثًا. فَقَالَ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَمَا أُحْسِنُ غَيْرَهُ، فَعَلِّمْنِي. فَقَالَ: \"إِذَا قُمْتَ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ، فَكَبِّرْ، ثُمَّ اقْرَأْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، ثُمَّ ارْكَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ رَاكِعًا، ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَعْدِلَ قَائِمًا، ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا، ثُمَّ ارْفَعْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ جَالِسًا، ثُمَّ اسْجُدْ حَتَّى تَطْمَئِنَّ سَاجِدًا، ثُمَّ افْعَلْ ذَلِكَ فِي صَلاَتِكَ كُلِّهَا\""}

This hadith provides a concise and complete description of the essential acts of prayer, highlighting the requirement for calmness and deliberation (ṭuma’nīnah) in each posture.

The Warning Against Neglecting Ṣalāh

The Quran issues a severe warning to those who are heedless of their prayer: "So, Woe to those performers of Salāh, who are unmindful of their Salāh" . The Prophet ﷺ also spoke about the hypocrite’s prayer, which is performed lazily and for show. He warned that the most burdensome prayers for hypocrites are the dawn prayer (Fajr) and the night prayer (‘Ishā’).

{"عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: \"إِنَّ أَثْقَلَ الصَّلاَةِ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ صَلاَةُ الْعِشَاءِ وَصَلاَةُ الْفَجْرِ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهِمَا لأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا\""}

This warning serves as a reminder to take prayer seriously, performing it with mindfulness and punctuality, rather than delaying or rushing through it.

The Congregational Prayer and Its Virtue

Performing Ṣalāh in congregation is highly emphasized, with a reward far greater than praying alone. The Prophet ﷺ stated: "The prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times better than the prayer of a person alone."

{"عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: \"صَلاَةُ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ صَلاَةِ الْفَذِّ بِسَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ دَرَجَةً\""}

This immense multiplication of reward illustrates the importance of unity and brotherhood in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ also emphasized the virtue of the first row and the right side of the row, and he instructed that the rows be straight and close together.

{"عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: \"سَوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ فَإِنَّ تَسْوِيَةَ الصُّفُوفِ مِنْ تَمَامِ الصَّلاَةِ\""}

These narrations guide the believer to seek the best in worship, both in quantity and quality, by attending the mosque and aligning with fellow Muslims in prayer.
