The evil eye is a real phenomenon, a harm that flows from envy and a spiteful gaze, and the believer’s foremost defense is to seek refuge in Allah, the Lord of daybreak, from the harm of the envier when he envies. The prescribed dua against the evil eye is a fortress of protection and a means of healing, rooted in the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah.
Understanding the Reality of the Evil Eye
The evil eye is not mere superstition; it is a truth that the Prophet ﷺ affirmed. It is the harm that befalls a person, their wealth, or their family when another looks upon them with envy or admiration that is not accompanied by remembrance of Allah. This reality is acknowledged across the authentic hadith literature. The Prophet ﷺ said that the evil eye is true, and he taught his community to seek refuge from it. The harm of the envier is described in the Qur'an, where Allah instructs His Prophet to say: {"قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ﴿١﴾ مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾\""} (Quran 113:1-5). This chapter, known as Surah al-Falaq, is a direct and potent weapon against the evil eye, as it seeks protection from the harm of the envier specifically.
The Prophet ﷺ would seek refuge for his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn, with the words of seeking refuge, saying: . This shows that the protection is not only for adults but also for children, and it is a practice of the blessed household of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Comprehensive Dua of the Prophet ﷺ
The most comprehensive and frequently recited dua for protection from the evil eye is the one the Prophet ﷺ used to recite. It is a supplication that encompasses all forms of harm. The Prophet ﷺ taught Abu al-Darda' to say: . This supplication, which includes the words "I seek protection in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created," is a powerful shield. The "perfect words of Allah" refer to the Qur'an and the divine attributes, and seeking refuge in them is a means of safety from all harm, including the evil eye. When a Muslim recites these words three times in the morning and three times in the evening, no harm can befall him, as the Prophet ﷺ explained in the same narration.
Additionally, the Prophet ﷺ recommended reciting the Mu'awwidhat (the last two chapters of the Qur'an) as a means of protection. He said: . These two chapters, Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas, are a complete protection from all evil, and they are the best means of seeking refuge.
The Ruqya of the Prophet ﷺ for Healing
When a person is afflicted by the evil eye, it is prescribed to perform ruqya (legitimate Islamic healing through recitation). The Prophet ﷺ would recite over the sick and would instruct others to do the same. He said regarding the cure: . This healing is facilitated by the knowledge that every disease has a cure, and the evil eye is no exception. The afflicted person should be treated with recitation of the Qur'an, particularly the Mu'awwidhat, and the supplications of the Prophet ﷺ.
One such supplication for healing is that the person praying for the afflicted says: . This narration includes the words "Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no cure but Your cure, a cure that leaves no disease." This is a direct and powerful dua for the one afflicted by the evil eye or any other ailment.
The Practice of Ghusl for the Envier
In cases where the envier is known, Islamic law prescribes a specific remedy. The Prophet ﷺ said: . This involves the envier performing ghusl (ritual bath) specifically for the benefit of the afflicted person. The water from that ghusl is then poured over the afflicted person, by their own hands, to neutralize the effect of the evil eye. This practice is rooted in the Sunnah and is a practical application of the believer's trust in Allah's decree and His ordained means.
The Prophet ﷺ also said: . This highlights the reality that the evil eye is a genuine affliction that can even cause death, and hence the severity of the matter and the importance of taking the prescribed measures.
Seeking Refuge in the Morning and Evening
The believer's daily program includes seeking refuge from the evil eye as part of the morning and evening remembrances. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says the following supplication three times in the morning and three times in the evening will not be harmed by anything: . This supplication is "In the name of Allah, Whom with His name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing." This is a powerful defense that encompasses protection from all forms of harm, including the evil eye.
Additionally, one should recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) after every prescribed prayer and before sleeping, as the Prophet ﷺ described its virtue: . While this hadith focuses on the protection from shaytan, the protection of Allah's name and words extends to all harms. The believer should also recite the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah, as the Prophet ﷺ said they suffice as a protection. .
The Qur'an's Warning Against Envy
The Qur'an itself warns against the envious soul and provides the believer with the refuge they need. In the context of the evil eye, envy is the root cause, and Allah commands us to seek refuge from the envier. The Qur'an describes the state of those who are heedless of Allah's signs, saying their eyes are blind against the truth:
الَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِي غِطَاءٍ عَن ذِكْرِي وَكَانُوا لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا
(Quran 18:101). This verse is a reminder that the eyes can be a source of both guidance and harm. The believer's eyes should be lowered from haram, but they should also be protected from the malice of others. Similarly, the Qur'an mentions that on the Day of Judgment, the eyes will testify against the disbelievers:
وَقَالُوا لِجُلُودِهِمْ لِمَ شَهِدتُّمْ عَلَيْنَا ۖ قَالُوا أَنطَقَنَا اللَّهُ الَّذِي أَنطَقَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ
(Quran 41:20). This is a grave warning about the consequences of misusing the faculties Allah has given.
The evil eye is thus a test of faith, and the believer's response is to rely on Allah, seek His protection, and use the prescribed means. Allah's justice is perfect; He is not heedless of the deeds of the wrongdoers, as He says:
وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ اللَّهَ غَافِلًا عَمَّا يَعْمَلُ الظَّالِمُونَ
(Quran 14:42). The envier's harm is limited by Allah's will, and the believer's ultimate trust is in the Most Merciful.
